FY 2018 Annual General Meeting

Check out our FY18 Annual Report here.

On Friday November 30, 2018, Pollinate Network rounded off FY18 with its Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at KPMG’s new Ignition Centre in Vancouver.

Ollie James, Founder and National Chairman, kicked off the evening with introduction to the KPMG Ignition Centre, followed by a synopsis of Pollinate’s inaugural year. In short, since our beginning in November 2017, we have grown to 250+ members from over 100 organizations. We have held 10 major events across Vancouver and are officially sponsored by KPMG, Microsoft, the Canucks and Finger Food Studios. And in FY19, we look forward to launching in Victoria and Toronto!

Dave Brett, CEO and Founder of Griffins Boxing, then took the stage and delivered a knockout key note speech. Dave has been coaching the “sweet science” for over 20 years and is the Head Coach for the 2019 Canadian Winter Games in February. Dave was a recipient of the Top Forty under 40 last year and is fresh off the stage at Ted x Vancouver. In Dave’s inspirational talk, he discussed the importance of building confidence and how to deal with the punches that life often throws at us!

Our members - Klaus Boedker, Scott Fulton and Sophia Park – then led a brilliant design thinking workshop, where we explored how we can enable and motivate more people to give back in our communities.

Pollinate FY18 Awards

I was very pleased to announce the winners of the FY18 Pollinate awards for their huge commitment to the Pollinate cause this year. The winners were:

Pollinator of the Year: Alex Shepard

Pollinate Impact Award: Sophia Park

Pollinate Catalyst Award: Arash Shadkam

Thank you Alex, Sophia and Arash, and the entire steering committee for making such a difference this year!

Donations to The Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau (LMCB)

Our members brought gifts, toys and games to the AGM that we are donating to the LMCB. The LMCB enables families in need to create Christmas experiences for their children through the donations of the community.

If anyone else would like to donate, please see their website here: http://www.lmcb.ca/wishes-1/

Beyond a Framework: Getting Real on Managing Agile Projects

On October the 5th, the Pollinate Network, in partnership with TELUS, hosted Beyond a Framework: Getting Real on Managing Agile Projects at the TELUS Garden’s Innovation Centre. We had a packed house of 40 individuals from over 15 different companies, along with a handful of TELUS Directors.

We had a great time exploring and discussing how we can use agile methodologies in our day-to-day work. Anthony Sage and Michelle Harrison led the session and focused on the fact that Agile is no longer a new way of working and viewed only through frameworks such as scrum and Kanban. We examined how project management can support the delivery and coordination of agile projects and products, as well as create engaged, high performing teams.

The Pollinate group was also taken on a tour of the TELUS Innovation Centre with Keith Davidson where the group got to learn about the exciting world of AR and VR. All in all, it was a very impactful and fun night!

Community Meal Program

Come down to the Salvation Army and help serve dinner to those in need.

The community meal program (also referred to as the feeding ministry or food line) provides nutritious free meals for men, women, and children in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside in a caring manner that dignifies and respects the individual. These meals act as a gateway to access other Harbour Light services. Many of the clients are unemployed or underemployed, addicted, mentally ill, and/or physically disabled. Their menus are reviewed by a dietitian to ensure they meet the unique needs of our clients.

They serve over 400 meals, ten times each week with the support of volunteers and donors from our community.

Volunteer spaces are limited.

AR, VR, and Robotics

On Thursday 26 April, Finger Food Studios hosted a fantastic, sell-out Pollinate event at their Holodeck facility in Port Coquitlam.

It took just 48 hours to sell all 50 places and fill up the waitlist, showing the huge demand for Pollinate’s future looking and technology focused events for young professionals in Vancouver!

Attendees included: Microsoft, UBC, Canucks, TELUS, CCC Investment Banking, Wood, Hyper Wallet, Crypto Capital Partners and Ekohe, as well as KPMG colleagues from Audit, Tax & Advisory.

After meeting downtown, a bus took everyone across to Port Coquitlam, providing a great chance to reconnect with old faces and meet some new ones.

Once at the facility, we were welcomed with refreshments and heard about Finger Food Studios, its use cases and strategic partnership with KPMG from Nick Facey (Finger Food), Parin Shah & Scott Fulton (KPMG).

We then experienced some wonderful live demos of AR, VR and Robotics applications delivered by the Finger Food Studios team.

We’ve had some fantastic feedback so far by email and in person, as well as scoring over 8.5/10 in our anonymous online survey to all participants.

Pollinate at the Canucks - Data & Analytics

  • The Sportsbar LIVE! At Rogers Arena (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

On January 18th, we hosted our 2nd consecutive sold-out event, thanks to the Canucks Sports & Entertainment team and our panel of expert presenters. The Sportsbar Live! At Rogers Arena played host to 65 of some of Vancouver’s most driven young professionals.

We were fortunate to have a highly-esteemed panel from KPMG (Ozge Uncu), Hootsuite (Graham Gullans), TELUS (Jeremy Hopwood) and the Canucks (Andrew McNiece, Mark Niehe & Jonathan Wall), facilitated by Pollinate’s very own Tanja Gutmanis:

The lively panel discussion uncovered many thought-provoking insights into the world of Data & Analytics, and how it is being leveraged to drive unprecedented value for leading organizations and their customers.
